Summer ends with a gay Holocaust documentary

The Cleveland Cinematheque ends the summer with two films of interest to LGBT audiences.

Paragraph 175, an award-winning documentary on Nazi persecution of gay and lesbian people during the Holocaust, will be shown August 31 to September 2.

The emotional, wrenching look at the hidden history of one of the world's greatest atrocities talks to a number of survivors of the concentration camps, including gay, Jewish author Gad Beck, and examines both the victimization of gay men and lesbians.

It will show on Friday at 9:40 pm, Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 4:30 pm. On a lighter note, the Cinematheque

will present Therese and Isabelle, the film adaptation of Violette Leduc's novel of the relationship between two girls in a French boarding school. The novel was banned for years, and Radley Metzger, king of the 1960s and 70s sexploitation films, actually managed to turn it into an erotic yet touching look at the love between two young women.

The film came out in 1967, and is very difficult to find, even on video.

Therese and Isabelle will be shown on August 30 at 7 pm.
